The TeraGrid, a backbone of national cyberinfrastructure, received
$30.2 million in extension funding from the National Science Foundation to continue providing an
integrated, persistent computational resource for the national research community. The project,
led by the University of Chicago, is titled "TeraGrid Extension: Bridging to eXtreme Digital (XD),"
and extends TeraGrid operations through 2011. Included in the extension is $1.05 million that will
come to the Louisiana Optical Network Initiative, or LONI, to extend the support and network
connections that allow TeraGrid users to access LONI's computational resources through March
2011.

Louisiana Public Broadcasting (LPB), headquartered in Baton Rouge, provides
local and national PBS programming for six separate DMAs as
well as to partner stations WLAE and WYES in New Orleans. Before 2008, all LPB programming
was delivered via satellite; this recent upgrade provides for IP network delivery with a satellite backup.

The Fall 2008 Internet2 Member Meeting took place 13 –16 October in New Orleans, Louisiana and was hosted by Louisiana State University and the Louisiana Optical Network Initiative (LONI). The program included many outstanding track sessions covering a broad range of topics. The 662 attendees, representing all Internet2 membership categories, took advantage of our in-person gathering to accomplish an impressive amount during the 77 Working Group, Special Interest Group, and Birds of a Feather meetings. In addition, we welcomed 75 first-time registrants to our member meeting, as well as 74 international attendees. Meeting attendees also participated in several activities surrounding our community-led Strategic Planning Process. For the first time ever, Internet2's
Advisory Council meetings were open, enabling meeting attendees to learn more about Internet2 governance and the important work going on within the Councils.

LONI will deploy and manage tw telecom’s Internet solution to connect Louisiana's 12 major research universities in order to greatly improve collaboration on research projects and deliver results faster, with greater accuracy.

Pluto may no longer be a planet, but Neptune is alive and well, and it’s poised to help
transport the University of New Orleans - and Louisiana - into a new world of supercomputing
and research capability. Neptune is UNO’s new IBM P5-575 supercomputer, which will
facilitate UNO’s participation in the Louisiana Optical Network Initiative (commonly known as
LONI), the state’s fiber optics network interconnecting mainframe computers at Louisiana’s
major research universities, making possible computation speeds more than 1000 times faster
than previously possible.

The State of Louisiana is at the verge of having a major new computing network,
Louisiana Optical Network Initiative (LONI,) that will provide a valuable resource for
leading-edge research in many fields that have advanced computing needs. The objective
of this symposium is to familiarize university faculty with some of the diverse
applications-focused high-speed and grid computing research activities related to LONI,
to explore new collaborative research and educational opportunities with regional
partners, and to explore how to strategically align LONI with new Southern University
initiatives, such as the formation of the Southern University Business & Research
Corporation (SUBRC).

When LONI—the Louisiana Optical Network Initiative—was initially proposed, one of
its fundamental selling points was its potential to attract federal research dollars that
Louisiana institutions might otherwise have had to forego. Now, barely into LONI’s first
phase as a working reality in our state, the initiative has already played a direct role in
attracting to our state over $20 million from such federal funding agencies as the National
Institute for Health and the National Science Foundation.
